Scattering of ashes

If you wish your ashes to be scattered, you can apply to the County Governor in advance for permission. As a general rule it is legal to scatter ashes at sea or in the mountains. You should send your application to the County Governor of the county in which you wish to have your ashes spread. You must be at least 15 years old to make such an application.

Surviving relatives may also be authorised to scatter ashes so long as they can provide documentation that this is in accordance with the deceased's wishes. The parents of a deceased child aged 17 or under may be granted permission to spread their child's ashes. Surviving relatives are not entitled to require a church representative to be present when the ashes are to be scattered.

Private burial sites

Permission for a private burial site may be granted only in cases where there is a particular public interest associated with the burial site, for example, if the burial site is associated with an institution that has been founded in the light of the deceased's life and work in artistic, scientific or other spheres.
